READ MOREJAYU’s Human Rights Film Festival (HRFF) opens its 7th installment with the powerful documentary TransMilitary, directed by Gabriel Silverman and Fiona Dawson. The film is based on outdated and discriminatory medical policies dating back to World War II, transgender people were banned from serving in the US military until July 2016. READ MORE
Set in the near future, SuperGrid follows the story of a young smuggler Deke (Marshall Williams, Glee), who is forced to make a run on the road that took the life of his sister. The third annual Bloody Mary Film Festival runs November 8th – 9th, 2018 at the Imagine Carlton Cinemas in Toronto. The festival will showcase short and feature-length genre films directed by Canadian female filmmakers over the course of two nights. READ MORE
Filmed during the last 9-10 years, Ontario’s Slater Jewell-Kemker has travelled the world on the front lines of climate change. At 15 years-old, Slater began documenting the rise of the global youth climate movement, which has taken her around the world to UN Climate Conferences and communities on the front lines of climate change. The result is the documentary Youth Unstoppable. READ MORE
The 7th annual Breakthroughs Film Festival (BFF) has been working tirelessly towards its vision of an industry that recognizes and effectively represents women filmmakers. For the second year in a row, the festival will screen the work of both New Generation (aged 18 – 30) women directors, as well as Emerging Women Directors (any age).
BFF will feature 19 outstanding short films from 9 different countries spanning across 5 continents. Among them are 4 Toronto-based filmmakers, plus award-winning shorts from locations as diverse as Iceland and Japan. READ MORE
Toronto’s Open Roof Festival (ORF) has moved to the city’s newest cultural hotspot – Lower Junction in Toronto’s Junction Triangle neighborhood. The festival will once again offer filmgoers an eclectic mix of Hollywood and indie flicks paired with emerging musicians or bands in a variety of genres. The Toronto True Crime Film Festival (TTCFF) will have its first annual edition this week, June 8 – 9, 2018 at The Royal Cinema and Monarch Tavern in Toronto. The inaugural lineup includes five film screenings and three symposium events, with 15% of all pass and ticket sales being donated to charity.
As a true crime fan, I am quite interested in attending a few screenings and events at TTCFF. Below are a few of my personal picks!

The 15th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival, co-presented by TIFF and Human Rights Watch, features a diverse lineup celebrating the power individuals can hold in complex social and political situations. This year’s Opening Night film is On My Way Out: The Secret Life of Nani and Popi. The film offers an intimate look at the story of Roman and Ruth Blank.
