As many already know, Harbourfront Centre offers a lot of great, free events over the summer months. This weekend they are bringing us the What is Classical festival. It will give you a chance to explore what other cultures view as classical music. They are showing some very good films like U-Carmen e-Khayelitsha (which I saw at TIFF in 2006 and highly recommend) along with music/dance workshops for young and old. There are lots to see and experience. You can find me there almost every weekend…
What else is going on this weekend? The annual Beaches Jazz Festival winds down this weekend. So make your way down to Kew Gardens or Queen East and enjoy the sounds of various local and international artists. Anyone heard of Dr. Draw? I discovered him at the old Chapters store on Bloor St. by Avenue Rd. He’s great and he’ll be playing at 1897 Queen St. East from Thursday to Sunday between 7pm to 11pm.
One cannot forget about Masala! Mehndi! Masti! One of the largest South Asian Arts Festivals. There will be some amazing performances, films, theatre works and don’t forget the food… all days from July 25th to 27th.
Lastly, there is the Just for Laughs festival. I hear that Shaun Majumder will be doing a free show at Yonge and Dundas Square this Friday evening around 6pm (much like last year’s Russell Peters’ show). At this outdoor event, they’ll also have the French troupe Transe Express Circus and others.
So weather permitting… the place to be this weekend is outdoors.
