Best Direction in a Reality Program or Series
Director Matt Hoos, Love It or List It, the Smout Family
“We are so excited and proud about these nominations,” says Big Coat Productions Executive and Producer Maria Armstrong, “and we are grateful to the audience and entertainment community for the show’s success.”
Love It or List It is a primetime reality series about homeowners whose love affair with their home has lost its sizzle. Maybe their needs have outgrown the home they once loved, or time has robbed it of its once-attractive lustre. The dilemma: love it or list it.
Each episode is filled with the stress of major renovations, the temptation of beautiful new real estate and a fierce rivalry between the show’s designer Hilary Farr and David Visentin the program’s real estate agent. Both of them are willing to go to any length for the homeowners’ allegiance. In the end, each homeowner must decide – do they Love It enough to stay or is it time to move and List It.
For those of you who may not know much about the show, here are three points producer Maria Armstrong shared with yours truly:
HM: Can you tell us how the show came about?
Maria Armstrong: The show came from a personal experience that both my business partner and I were having in our individual lives. The homes we had and once loved weren’t working any more, so the question came renovate or move?? During a meeting with the W Network this discussion came up and other people around the table were in the same situation, so my business partner Catherine Fogarty and I said that would make a great show. The original title was Should I Stay or Should I Go? That was a very long title so the network asked us to change it to Love It or List It, which was a great title for the show.
HM: I know that show is very popular; please tell us more about this.
MA: Well we are overwhelmed by the response we get from the public, Hilary, David, Desta, Eddy and Fergus are recognized everywhere they go and the network ratings tells us that this show is well liked and viewers enjoy it. So I would say the popularity is extremely good. We are very grateful to the viewers who watch the show time after time.
HM: Over time, has the show gotten bigger?
MA: Well the size of the show has always been big, always large renovations. However, we have increased our team somewhat so that we can deal with the amount of renovations and house hunting for so many shows. We are currently in our 4th season and will go straight into our 5th season when that is finished.
