The Great Digital Film Festival brings a week of fan favourite sci-fi, action and cult films back to
the big screen, where they were meant to be seen – often for the first time in crystal clear digital format.
The festival expands again this year, with Cineplex’s Front Row Centre Events adding locations at Cineplex Odeon Gardiners Road Cinemas in Kingston, ON; Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Cineplex Cinemas Avalon Mall Cinemas in St. John’s, Newfoundland. This makes the festival more accessible throughout Canada.
“Each year, The Great Digital Film Festival brings movie fans the best sci-fi, action and cult films of years past,” says Brad LaDouceur, Vice President, Alternative Programming, Cineplex Entertainment. “There’s no better way to revisit your favourite movies, or for new audiences to discover great films on the big screen.”
The festival begins on January 31st and runs until February 6th. On February 1st, audiences can participate in a day-long superhero marathon, with screenings of Superman (1978), Spiderman (2002), Iron Man (2008), and many more. The festival will also feature a retro sci-fi day on February 2nd, where fans can catch classics Battlestar Galactica (1978), Logan’s Run (1976), Flash Gordon (1980) and Tron (1982). I don’t know about you, but seeing some of these classics on the big screen is actually a treat. Looks like I’ll be doing a couple of marathons myself this year.
This year’s full lineup includes some excellent films; such as, Akira (1988), Brazil (1985), Ghost in the Shell (1995), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Monty Python and The Holy Grail (1975), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), Planet of the Apes (1968), Snatch (2000), The Dark Knight (2008), The Fisher King (1991), Thunderball (1965), and several others. A full list of films, as well as, participating theatres is available at Cineplex.com/DigitalFilmFest.
I attended some of the screenings last year. Some films I had not seen on-screen before, and others were worth revisiting. For a week, you can travel back in time, enjoy an old fave, and maybe introduce friends to new faves, too.
Admission is only $6.00 and additional discounts are available with the purchase of multiple films. To view showtimes or purchase tickets, visit the festival’s website.
