Thanks to the First Weekend Club, some of us gathered at the Drake Underground to hear four Genie Nominated filmmakers talk about the industry and their individual experiences. The panel, moderated by Richard Crouse (Canada AM, NewsTalk 1010), included Brett Gaylor (Dir. of RIP: A Remix Manifesto), Charles Officer (Dir. of Nurse.Fighter.Boy), Kari Skogland (Dir. of Fifty Dead Men Walking) and Chris Landreth (Dir. of Ryan and The Spine).
This video is a short introduction of what the afternoon was like. They talked about financing, the “future” of film making, which included a very animated chat about 3D films, and future projects. The discussion about how many of the “big” studios are expecting most films come out in 3D was quite informative. I’m hoping that is not necessarily the case for all films as content and story are more important in some cases than special effects. Granted; 3D works well for some films but I certainly hope it’s not the only option we’ll have as film-goers. They talked about much more. It was great to hear about their passion for the work. It’s not very often we get to hear directly from Canadian directors about the challenges they face but also about their commitment to making good films.
Big shout out to the First Weekend Club crew for putting this event together as well as the Canada Screen Series. For information on the Genies and the Nominees go to http://www.genieawards.ca. The First Weekend Club has lots of information on Canadian Films here.
