The TD Toronto Jazz Festival has added another funk and soul master to this year’s lineup! Responsible for revolutionizing R&B during the ’70s and twisting soul music into funk, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will headline opening night on Friday, June 19 for a FREE special performance as part of Music Mania weekend.
Making P-Funk a household name, the hugely Clinton led two of the most important groups at that time – Parliament and Funkadelic. He would eventually go on to build an impressive solo discography, continuing to spread the gospel of funk to the masses and inspiring a new generation of artists and music lovers.
If you’ve ever seen him perform live, you know his energy is high. And of course, you leave feeling funkdafied. This is one show not-to-be-missed!
On the day of the event, wristbands will be distributed at 4 pm on the east side of Nathan Phillips Square for entry into the George Clinton show on the Toronto Star Stage, inside the tent. One wristband per person.
A 9′ x 16′ high-resolution screen will also illuminate the Square allowing everyone to enjoy the performance wherever they are standing.
Also, do not forget Dumpstaphunk and Morris Day & The Time will be performing on the Outdoor Stage. Wristbands are NOT required for these two shows.
Music Mania will continue all weekend long with non-stop activity at Nathan Phillips Square with performances from Tower of Power, the legendary Count Basie Orchestra and free concerts from the Shuffle Demons, Toronto Mass Choir, Tyler Yarema & His Rhythm and more.
On Saturday, June 20, do not miss Groove & Graffiti, in collaboration with Manifesto, as the Juice Money Collective, Melanie Durrant and Adria Kane provide the soundtrack to live art being created by professional aerosol artists Elicser and Mediah. On Sunday, June 21, the Regent Park School of Music takes over with special performances all afternoon long, as well as an instrument petting zoo. Giving young music lovers the chance to try out various instruments.
