Being a teenager has never been an easy journey. Director Elvira Lind set forth on making a film on what it is like to be a teenager, being in love, and coming of age. In Songs For Alexis, Lind focuses on 18-year-old Ryan Cassata, a passionate and talented talented musician and transgender young man.
He is wildly in love with the beautiful and enigmatic 16-year-old Alexis, but her parents’ disapproval of Ryan forces her to choose between her family and an unsafe future with the man she loves.
The film had its world premiere at Hot Docs earlier this week to a sold-out crowd. There is something about teenage love that we can all relate to. But there is also something to be said for being fully aware of who you are during this time of upheaval and changes. The reviews for the film have been nothing but positive. This is a documentary that you probably want to add to your list, if you not done so yet.

Songs For Alexis plays once again tonight, May 2nd at 7pm at the Scotiabank Theatre. Same-day tickets are still available at the venue.
