If there is something I’ve learned over the years is that if I really want to go somewhere, be it to see a film, go to a concert or any other event, I will go on my own. As a gal, it may feel a little weird at first because we’re used to go out with friends often. However, you’ll find that you’ll enjoy yourself just as much. I think it liberating in a sense that you will not feel responsible for others’ enjoyment because let’s face it… there are times your friends/family/significant others will not want to go to the same places you do.
So I fly solo many times and I actually do not feel awkward nor nerdy, like some may think. Last Tuesday, I ventured over to Wrongbar to experience some great musical acts. Toronto’s sexy Saidah Babah Talibah (SBT), UK singer VV Brown and the Swedish band Little Dragon. The night began with SBT singing a great opening set… SBT and the band really heated up the place. I was glad to see many, like me, who got there just in time to see SBT live. For those of you who have not seen Saidah live, well, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. My words cannot fully describe her talents… As a friend of mine often said to me, “go out to catch a vibe.” And what a nice vibe it was.
After Saidah, I was curious to hear VV Brown. I had only recently heard her music and was looking forward to hearing her live. She is petite but don’t be fooled; Miss Brown fills the stage. Her voice is lovely and her range of musical genres appealed to all in the crowd. She sang some reggae, some Fela Kuti, and of course, her own work like Shark in the Water.
Last but certainly not least… after a bit of a wait, Little Dragon came on stage. I had never seen them live but have heard their music before and really liked it. So this time, I wasn’t about to miss them. I frankly lost track of time and lost myself in the music… This is true for all the performances, by the way. Little Dragon were definitely worth the wait. I took a short video clip of one of their songs (sorry do not have the name). I was too caught up with the percussion.
I had a great trip; I forgot I was there by myself…. The price, the location, the crowd and of course, the music were all just right. The whole night was a highlight for the week. The type of music was diverse yet one act blended with the other quite well. So next time you’re looking “to catch a vibe,” just go for it.
