One Billion Rising Toronto, with the support of Young People’s Theatre and Children’s Peace Theatre, is pleased to present the return of Emotional Creature by Eve Ensler, in a new production directed by Tanisha Taitt. Proceeds from the May 28th & 29th performances will benefit the Metro Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children (METRAC: Action On Violence).
Tony-Award winning playwright, performer and activist Eve Ensler is the author of the international phenomenon The Vagina Monologues, and founder of V-Day/One Billion Rising, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls.
The play is based on Ensler’s bestselling book I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Lives Of Girls Around The World, a moving work inspired by frank conversations with teenaged girls around the globe. Emotional Creature is a funny and poignant invitation to girls everywhere to raise their voices, claim their bodies, follow their hearts, and strive to be their authentic selves.
Performed by an ensemble of 13 talented young women, ages 13 to 19, Emotional Creature is made up of original monologues—and irresistible songs—about and for girls. Placing their stories squarely center stage, it gives full expression to their secret voices and innermost thoughts, highlighting the diversity and commonality of the issues they face. Emotional Creature is a call, a reckoning, an education, an act of empowerment for girls, and an illumination for parents and for us all. It’s an important and timely project.
