Opera and absurdist theatre come together in All But Gone – A Beckett Rhapsody, a groundbreaking musical exploration of the short plays of Samuel Beckett brought to us by Necessary Angel Theatre Company.
Led by director Jennifer Tarver (Venus in Fur, Beckett: Feck It!) and featuring performers Jonathon Young (Betroffenheit) and Paul Fauteux alongside opera stars Shannon Mercer and Krisztina Szabó, All But Gone promises to be “a mesmerizing take on one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century”.
Having attended some of Necessary Angel’s previous productions, I am quite intrigued by this new take on Beckett’s works. Tarver and company use contemporary pieces for female voices by female composers to contrast the masculinity of Beckett. I am hearing this mix of theatre and song includes music inspired by the poet Sylvia Plath.
Sounds like a real treat for Beckett and opera fans alike. Be sure to add All But Gone to your schedule this month.
