Young People’s Theatre (YPT) brings us the World Premiere of Under the Stairs by acclaimed British playwright Kevin Dyer. The play presents a theatrical but authentic portrayal of family strife.
In this innovative musical play, the cupboard under the stairs is a magical place that provides young Tim with refuge from Mom & Dad’s bickering. One day, Tim escapes into the cupboard only to find he is not alone – there are other children there too. When Tim’s parents disappear, he enlists the help of the other children to find them. Together they uncover surprising secrets that could repair the turmoil in Tim’s house.
Conflict and argument between the parents lead the central character, a young boy, to feelings of abandonment and the need to escape the situation at home. Through the course of the story, he is unwittingly pushed aside by his parents and must rely on himself and the help of young friends to bring his family back together.
Under the Stairs exemplifies YPT’s season theme of young people acting as change agents for themselves when adults fail to act.
The play is directed by Micheline Chevrier. Featuring Neema Bickersteth, Martin Julien, Richard Lee, Kyle Orzech, Paul Rainville, Fiona Sauder, and Kelsey Verzotti.
Under the Stairs is currently on stage at YPT’s Mainstage until April 16, 2019. Recommended for Grades 3-8 | Ages 8 & up. For showtimes and ticketing info, please visit youngpeoplestheatre.ca.
