Step into the world of The Masterclass and prepare to be immersed in a unique experience. The show revolves around Nathan Bridgets (Kyle Claeys), “a multifaceted Canadian artist renowned for his contributions to acting, directing, and theatre theory”. Held in a private studio, this ‘masterclass’ is an intimate journey into his acclaimed acting technique, as detailed in his bestselling book ‘An Actor Does NOT Prepare.’
From the moment we enter the studio, we see Nathan curled up on the floor, at one corner of the space. Stephanie (M Fera), Nathan’s assistant and sister, lists some ‘housekeeping’ notes and taps Nathan to indicate the class participants are ready. Throughout the class, Nathan commands attention with his animated and engaging style. He is both instructive and entertaining, blending elements of storytelling with hands-on exercises that invite us to explore our own acting abilities.
We are active participants in this masterclass, which includes movement as well as vocalization exercises and improvisations which Nathan himself uses in mastering his craft. It was evident from other ‘class participants’ that everyone enjoyed this interactive nature as well.
One of the funny highlights of the show – ahem ‘class’ – is Nathan’s mention of his scandalous one-man production of ‘Equus,’ a reference that generated laughter from those familiar with the play. For those unfamiliar with that show, the reference seemed to lose its impact just a bit. Nonetheless, the dynamic between Nathan and his sister also added more moments of humor – it is clear there is some ‘drama’ between the two which made a few of us chuckle too.
The Masterclass is a fun experience overall. I would recommend going with a friend like I did. In our case, we enjoyed Claeys’ portrayal of Nathan as a desperate actor who is eagerly hoping everyone signs up for his 6-week program. We also appreciated Fera’s role of Stephanie, who keeps us ‘organized’ but also adds to the comedic element of the experience. The blend of interactive elements and amusing references, creates a memorable evening out. The Masterclass will appeal to both theatre enthusiasts and the general public alike.
