When Alex discovers a dark side of the metaverse, where predators, extremists, and hate groups exploit platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, she teams up with a group of young investigators to expose the truth. Their search leads them to a predator with multiple victims and a kidnapped child, uncovering the devastating consequences of a system failing to protect its most vulnerable users.
The TVO Original Dangerous Games: Roblox and the Metaverse Exposed is a character-driven documentary following Alex, Janae, and Katie as they reveal the serious and hidden dangers lurking within the metaverse.
The film reveals some of the most urgent issues of our time within one of the most revolutionary technological platforms: the Metaverse. Chances are that kids know much more about the metaverse than their parents. This virtual world is not all PG. Platforms like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite have experienced explosive growth, with over 860 million users on those platforms alone with most users being under 18 years old.
When Katie is sexually harassed inside Roblox — a virtual world designed for children, with as many as 78 million daily users, the trio set on a mission to expose a far more sinister reality. They begin spreading the word about this project to their vast contacts in the metaverse. As their investigation gains traction, real-world tragedies emphasize the extremely serious consequences of a system failing to protect its most vulnerable users.
Dangerous Games: Roblox and the Metaverse Exposed places young people in the driver’s seat, highlighting their role as key participants. Combined with expert interviews and verité storytelling, the film exposes the gaps in platform regulations and the dangers that continue to slip through the cracks.
Filmmaker Ann Shin and Alex, one of the young activists and amateur investigators, join me to talk about coming together to raise awareness about this very important issue.
Dangerous Games: Roblox and the Metaverse Exposed will have its TVO broadcast premiere in Ontario on Sunday, May 25, 2025. Sunday, May 25 @ 9pm ET. It will also be available to stream across Canada via the TVO Docs YouTube channel, TVO.org and Smart TV app.
