Echo Women’s Choir offers a rousing and inspiring alternative to holiday season fare in its December concert When She Won’t Back Down. Special guests for the evening are the Latin American band Las Brujas del Barrio.
For this concert, Alan Gasser and Tahirih Vejdani lead the choir in a program of stirring marches, anthems and songs of determination and encouragement in the struggle for rights and justice.
Echo sings Volver a los 17 (Returning to 17) by the legendary Chilean singer-songwriter Violeta Parra, and more. Other program highlights include the civil rights classic Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ’Round, Tom Waits’ quietly determined version of the Italian anti fascist hymn Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful), and What Happens When a Woman? by Alexandra Olsavsky of the vocal trio Artemesia. On the gentler side are a Georgian lullaby, a 2019 song Fire In My Heart by Canadian-English singer-songwriter Emily Roblyn, and more.
Las Brujas del Barrio also entertain with a set of their own. The band is a music project of Chilean born musicians and singers Valentina Harper, Alejandra Alvarado D’Eath, and guitarist Daniel Saavedra. The band aims to unite the music of Latin America under one umbrella of Latin American unity.
When She Won’t Back Down takes place Sunday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 19 Trinity Square (behind the Eaton Centre; wheelchair accessible).
Tickets are $25 at the door; $15 for seniors, children and underwaged.
Tickets and information can be obtained from EventBrite, at the Echo Women’s Choir website, by e-mailing info.echo@gmail.com or by calling 416-779-5554.
