Multidisciplinary artist, Rochelle Richardson, talks about her latest work, QUEEN LATIFAH GIVE ME STRENGTH. This video show /soundscape/ workshop piece will be showing as part of Rendezvous With Madness (RWM) Festival’s Re:Building Resilience Exhibition.
RWM is the world’s largest and longest running arts festival focused on the intersection of mental health and artistic practice. This will be its 28th edition. It is an initiative of Workman Arts, which support artists with lived mental health experiences as well as creating opportunities for artistic expression for individuals living with mental health issues.
Despite the pandemic, the festival is presenting their largest ever art exhibition this year, Re:Building Resilience, which features 25 installations that examine all facets of mental health issues.
Rochelle Richardson is taking part in this exhibition with her filmed version of her play QUEEN LATIFAH GIVE ME STRENGTH. Richardson is a Canadian-Caribbean multidisciplinary theatre artist, writer, producer and advocate for Black, Queer, Mad/Mentally Ill, and disabled communities. Rochelle is currently exploring the use of magic-realism in the development of performance, particularly delving into subjects pertaining to race/cultural identity, sexuality, gender, social change, and fantasy.
QUEEN LATIFAH GIVE ME STRENGTH tells the story of a woman with a feeling of deep connection to Queen Latifah, as she navigates the challenges of being a Black women dealing with the health care system. Take a listen to the full interview with Richardson and learn more about her process.
