The 24th Planet in Focus International Environmental Film Festival (PIF) opens this week in Toronto. This year’s lineup is rich in stories from the frontlines of environmental protests, reconciliation efforts and the human impact of climate change.

TIFF came and went in a whirlwind… This year, I had the opportunity to view 24 features and 5 short films from Canada and around the world. I enjoyed the energy of the festival and albeit the SAG-WGA strikes, we had wonderful international guests in attendance.
Once festival closes, it is always difficult to create a list of favourites. Nevertheless, here are some standouts for me at this year’s TIFF.

As part of the Industry programming, TIFF brought back its TIFF Series Accelerator programme this year. The programme, presented by Canada Media Fund, was set up to provide mentorship for eight emerging Canadian series-creator teams from under-represented communities to refine their pitches and develop a business plan for their projects.

The online film academy, The Art of Documentary (AOD) was founded by Mark Bone and Michael Del Monte. AOD was founded to provide a course and a community that helps advance a more well-rounded filmmaker and gain access to professional opportunities.
