Documentary Chasing Time reunites Extreme Ice Survey project lead and photographer James Balog with the Emmy-winning team behind Chasing Ice to capture the end of the epic undertaking and spotlight the power of an intergenerational effort to seed hope and inspire action toward a sustainable future.
Led by acclaimed director Jeff Orlowski-Yang (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral, The Social Dilemma) and first-time filmmaker Sarah Keo, Chasing Time is a thoughtful exploration of time and mortality, following James and his crew as they bring the decades-long project to an end.
Over the course of the 15-year Extreme Ice Survey project, James Balog and team brought some of the world’s first and most compelling visual evidence of climate change to the global stage. The images captured from the poject, showed us the rapid melting of glaciers around the world. The project catalogued more than one million images during its lifetime.
In its short 39-minute running time, Chasing Time captures not ony some powerful images but also reminds us how these images have impacted the work and politics around climate change. It is also a moving tribute to Balog’s mentorship to the entire team team. And no least important, it is a “love letter” from Orlowski-Yang to Balog with whom he has developed a close friendship over the years.
As Chasing Time continues its festival run, I had the pleasure of speaking with co-directors Jeff Orlowski-Yang and Sara Keo. We spoke about their approach as co-directors of the film, working with James Balog and more.
