SummerWorks Performance Festival is just around the corner. This year’s theme of ‘Survival Mode’ aims to start conversations and work with and within the community as a pathway toward understanding, reconciliation, and joy.
Speaking of joy… My preview coverage for the festival continues with even more interesting and exciting details about a show by Femmepire making waves since last year.
SummerWorks Presentations – Bimbos in Space!
This program includes fully developed new works, offering a snapshot of contemporary boundary-defying performance.
Bimbos in Space! is described as “a stupid sexy satire, born at the altar of transgressive cult classics and ‘xploitation B-movies of the 1960s. With psychic slugs Sesta and Fosta approaching at hyper-femme hyper-speed, our cunning heroes fight libertarian cowboys, an immortal tampon deity, Elon Musk’s cryogenically frozen head, and negotiate the true meaning of justice in an increasingly polarized galaxy.”
With such a description, I made a point to add this show to my list and to hear more about it. Femmepire company member, Kit Simmons and I had a great conversation about the show, the community representation within the show, as well as, the need to tackle ‘sensitive topics’ in a funny and safe way in order for everyone to get a different – or perhaps updated – perspective on such topics.
Performances of Bimbos in Space! will take place on August 6-8. For scheduling details and tickets, please visit summerworks.ca.
