The Toronto Fringe Festival is Ontario’s largest performance festival with an eclectic mix of topics and themes.
This year, Toronto Fringe will host performances at traditional theatre spaces and pop-up venues spread out between Keele Street, Davenport Avenue, Pape Avenue, and Lake Ontario, with dramatic theatre, clown, dance, storytelling, sketch comedy, musicals, improv, puppets, and stand up, plus six KidsFest shows, and thirteen days of free community programming at the Festival Hub at Soulpepper.
Continuing my support of the festival by sharing Part 2 of My Picks of shows you can enjoy this year.
Hye’s Picks Part 2
A reminder that my list includes shows that piqued my interest as well as shows whose teams reached out to invite me to their performances. I may not make it to all, however, I can help support the artists by suggesting their shows to you.

VideoCabaret Deanne Taylor Theatre
Windsor, 1969. Every Thursday, sixteen suburban housewives trade their aprons for cold beers, cigarettes, and dirty jokes at the neighbourhood’s first backyard pool. The play is a booze-fueled escape from domesticity, but beneath the laughter lies a powder keg of hidden truths, from alcoholism to closeted homosexuality. It’s a beautiful, chaotic oasis the neighbourhood ultimately decides to stop at all costs.

The audience holds the cards. They make the decisions. They verify that what is happening is real. And somehow, impossibly, they still become complicit in constructing the illusion. The performance is a deepfake. But it’s one that the audience builds themselves.

Puppy Sphere, Burroughs Building
The show follows adopted siblings Aaron and Claire, one supposedly well-adjusted, the other deeply disturbed, as their lives intertwine with those of their neighbours: a reclusive man and his mail-order bride. What begins as quiet domestic observation spirals into a disturbing exploration of control, isolation, and the hidden lives unfolding behind closed doors.

Until July 12, 2026
Soulpepper Theatre’s Michael Young Theatre
This show is a 100% historically questionable retelling of the world’s first theatre makers as they sharpen their sticks, refine their scripts, and discover THE ARTIST’S WAY. But beneath the faux fur, rocks, and unbridled ambition, it’s really a show about art, ego, collaboration, and the deeply human need to create something meaningful — while also not taking any of it too seriously.

When her routine space commute goes catastrophically off-course, Roe is left stranded aboard a failing shuttle with only one lifeline: a phone call with a bitter, underpaid customer service agent. This new science fiction play explores bureaucracy, economic precarity, and the immigrant experience through one darkly funny, high-stakes fight for survival.

Gabriel wakes up in the middle of the night, trapped in the house of his deceased grandfather. Stumbling through a series of waking nightmares, he picks away at the walls of his psyche in search of a sense of authenticity. The show is a hopeful exploration of loss and grief; a journey through the mind of a man defined by his past and threatened by his future.

This is a contemporary adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, following eight twenty-somethings who have spent the summer at a cottage. Boredom is calcifying, romantic tensions are mounting, family dynamics are sharpening, and no one really knows what the f*ck they are going to do next. What happens when you have your whole life ahead of you, and anything is possible? You panic about the onslaught of regret that may one day come for you if you make the wrong choice, of course.

The show is described as “anime meets musical;” it is inspired by Ghibli cooking scenes, lo-fi study mixes, musical baths, and the quest for existential meaning. The show is a love letter to the ways our modern human experience is at once confounding, infuriating, hilarious, and heartening.
