My Music Notes series returns with multidisciplinary artist SlowPitchSound (Cheldon Paterson).
Paterson has a new collaboration with Soundstreams, a company that showcases the work of Canadian and international composers through innovative musical experiences. His latest commission, A Fanfare for Spaces Between, will open Soundstreams’ 40th anniversary fanfare March 25th program.
Paterson and I had a great conversation this week, during which, he shared that he does not “think of his work as ‘music’… it’s more about creating environments… creating a space or landscape.” This led to a really great conversation about his career as a composer, mentor, and explorer of sound & visuals. He also shared some details about his upcoming Soundstreams performance of A Fanfare for Spaces Between Time with trumpeters Émilie Fortin and Amy Horvey.
Soundstreams’ March 25th program STEVE REICH: Now & Then is a celebration of legendary American composer Steve Reich’s 86th birthday with this special one-night event.
The evening’s program includes Drumming, featuring legendary percussion ensemble NEXUS, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary, and TorQ Percussion Quartet. Also included is Reich/Richter for chamber orchestra and film, a recent work enjoying its Canadian premiere. Additionally, a new version of Reich’s legendary piece Clapping Music, conceived and directed by filmmaker Atom Egoyan, featuring Steve Reich on film and Russell Hartenberger in live performance, shot by director of photography Cam Davis.
