Inspired by Thomas’ celebrated short film Redlights, Nika & Madison follows two Indigenous women whose lives are thrown into chaos after a violent encounter with police.
Setting the Scene
In this tense and emotionally charged story, two childhood friends find themselves testing their resilience and loyalty in an ultimate fight for justice. Madison, a University of Toronto student, is sharp and career focused while Nika prefers the solitude and simplicity of life on the reservation. During a weekend back home, Nika rescues Madison from a sexual assault by a policeman, but the violent encounter leaves the officer critically injured.
Fearing they won’t be believed, the Indigenous women go on the run; first seeking refuge on the reserve and then deep into the wilderness, until they’re chased back to the city. Two sharp-eyed detectives begin to uncover the truth, but when the case involves one of their own, the justice system reveals its deeply ingrained biases, blurring the lines between right and wrong.
Anchored by two remarkable lead performances, Ellyn Jade (Little Bird, Vikings) stars as Nika and Star Slade (Burden of Truth, Dream Scenario) as Madison. The pair bring emotional intensity to the story of two women bound by loyalty as they navigate danger and injustice, through the strength of their bond.
Interview with Star Slade
Just before the world premiere of the film at TIFF, I sat down with Co-Lead Star Slade (Nika) to speak about her role and her hopes for the film.
Interview with Director Eva Thomas
In her director’s statement, Thomas describes she set out ‘to create a journey that feels grounded and unflinching—one that centres Indigenous women not as victims or symbols, but as fully alive, complex people. I want audiences to feel not only the urgency of the issues at hand, but the depth of love and spirit that makes survival possible. I want them to root for Nika and Madison like they’d root for their own sisters.”
Also before the film’s premiere at TIFF, I had the opportunity to speak with Eva to hear more about her journey bringing it to life.
Following its acclaimed world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and a strong run on the international festival circuit, Nika & Madison, the debut feature from writer and director Eva Thomas, has now extended its theatrical to a much wider release across Canada.
