TIFF always offers a good selection of short films. Realistically, I cannot watch all of them but herein I do share my thoughts on three shorts that truly captured my attention — It’s Nothing, The Physics Of Sorrow, and Now It’s The Time.

Inspired by a very real and transformative moment in co-director Elle-Máijá Tailfeather‘s life, The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open threads a delicately complex story of a chance encounter between two Indigenous women with drastically different lived experience, navigating the aftermath of domestic abuse.

Director Thomas Heise was born in East Berlin, and his first films were banned from release until the fall of the German Democratic Republic in 1990. Over the past thirty years, Heise has worked as a director of both theatre and documentary films, exploring the cultural and political changes through this tumultuous period in Germany.
In Heimat Is A Space In Time, Heise examines his family home and homeland, through the many ups and down of 19th-20th century Germany. Through the use of family letters, photographs and government records, Heise attempts to piece together what remains of his family.
Stories about migrant workers are common these days; for better or worse. In María Paz González‘s LINA FROM LIMA, we see a different perspective on this theme. She introduces us to Lina (Magaly Solier), a Peruvian woman working for a higher class family in Santiago, Chile. Lina is a strong woman, who is on the verge of reinventing herself in a new world.

Daniel Roher’s deeply personal story of the Canada’s Robbie Robertson, a Crave Original Documentary, will open the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Thursday, September 5th.
