Ryerson University’s annual Social Justice Week Mandela ECI Lecture has always managed to capture the imagination of a wide variety of Torontonians by keeping its finger on the pulse of timely, topical issues tied to race, culture, and the African diaspora. This free event takes place Wednesday, October 25 at Ryerson University.
This year’s Mandela ECI Lecture Black Be/longing: At the crossroads of art, culture, and human rights will spotlight one of Canada’s most important contemporary writers and revolutionary thinkers, M. NourbeSe Philip.
Starting this week, the Ontario Science Centre’s new fall speaker series Great Conversations promises to engage us in important topics. From the need for climate change action to the search for extraterrestrial life, this provocative four-part speaker series brings leading global experts to Toronto audiences to share thoughts, ideas and perspectives on a range of critical issues.
Great Conversations launches its journey of discussion, debate and discovery with inaugural speaker David Suzuki this Thursday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The InspiraTO festival kicks off its 12th season from June 1st – 10th, and will take over Toronto’s historic Alumnae Theatre over nine days. The festival will showcase the work of 24 writers from across the globe. The plays, which made the very competitive cut out of over 450 submissions, address what it means to ‘grow up’.
Writer, director and producer Toru Tokikawa’s film is the story of how a Canadian craftsman and an American designer collaborate across the world to revive the ancient Japanese woodcut (Ukiyo-e) using pop-culture icons from video game characters and franchises like Super Mario and Pokémon, just to name two.
