Time for another instalment of my Theatre Crawl listings. The month of April has arrived and with it, we have a great many shows to enjoy!
Written & Performed by Jivesh Parasram, Take d Milk, Nah? is the story of how he once birthed a cow… kinda. Catchy tag line, no? Read on to find out about the inspiration behind Parasram’s show.
In the early 90’s, playwright Michael Healey riffed on the concept of Theatre Passe Muraille’s 1972 project The Farm Show – a devised performance that saw actors from the city interacting with farmers in rural Ontario to uncover the challenges of country life – as a starting point for an intriguing script of friendship and loss. As Theatre Passe Muraille celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, they have decided to remount Healey’s The Drawer Boy, currently on-stage until March 25th.

Pioneers in devised theatre incorporating movement, live music, interactive design, and media work, Theatre Gargantua is a leading multi-disciplinary theatre company. Jacquie P.A. Thomas, one of Canada’s longest-serving female Artistic Directors, founded Theatre Gargantua in 1992. Alongside with Michael Spence and other artists, Thomas has made Theatre Gargantua an artist-driven company that produces ground-breaking works in two-year cycles.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Thomas and Spence before the premiere of their latest work, Reflector, to talk about the company, and their upcoming premiere.

With theatre season continuing in Toronto, it is time for another edition of this personally curated Theatre Crawl listing. The variety of shows currently on-stage include reinterpretations of Shakespeare, and also works based on Robert Munsch’s stories.
In John & Waleed, John Millard (Dora Nominated) and Waleed Abdulhamid (New Pioneer Award) use stories and songs to explore the differences and similarities between their cultures. Currently on stage at Theatre Passe Muraille, the friends who grew up in Southern Ontario and the Sudan respectively, play a set-list that blends the music of their contrasting folk traditions, while riffing on the harmonies and dissonance of their upbringings.
After years spent under copyright, Aldous Huxley’s enduring classic Brave New World will come to life on a Canadian stage for the first time in decades. Produced by Litmus Theatre and Kabin and with the support of Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM), Brave New World previews September 27-28, opens September 29 and runs until October 16, 2016.
This installment of Theatre Crawl listings includes performances that will appeal to all ages and interests.
