READ MOREEarlier this month, Female Voices Rock Film Festival was available virtually to attendees across the USA and abroad. The festival line up featured filmmaker panels, creative conversations and workshops, digital networking, and a selection of short films showcasing womxn voices from across the globe.
I had the privilege of attending several of these panels, conversations and workshops. This is a short recap of my first experience attending this very important and well planned film festival.
I first met Carolyn Mauricette at the Blood In The Snow Film Festival (BITS) a few years back. I have also been following her write on View From The Dark, where she examines and writes about genre film from a Woman of Colour’s perspective.
Aside from her writing, Carolyn is also a programmer at BITS. I am happy to have had a chance to speak with her about her writing, and about her role as programmer at BITS and some of her picks at this year’s festival.
The 20th edition of aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival returns with a virtual edition this year. For their twentieth anniversary, aluCine’s programming is centred around two major themes: migration in cinema, and Latin womxn in cinema. Already underway, you can take part in the online program free of charge.

Akilla’s Escape the latest feature by Charles Officer stars Saul Williams as Akilla Brown, a man who unexpectedly walks into a drug heist gone wrong. Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival announced its full lineup of films selected for the 2020 Festival. Originally scheduled to be revealed on March 24, the announcement was delayed when this year’s Festival, slated for April 30-May 10, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hot Docs’ decision to announce its official selections is mainly to honour and celebrate the hard work of the filmmakers and to support them as they seek opportunities in these difficult times.
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival has announced that multi-award winner Stanley Nelson will be the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award during this year’s Festival, recognizing his enduring contribution to the documentary form.
Hot Docs will also pay tribute to Raymonde Provencher with their annual Focus On program, which showcases the work of a significant Canadian filmmaker.
