Below I share a list of films on my list so far. For those able to attend virtually, in the USA, I hope we can partake in the festival energy together even if remotely.
Eve (Lucie Debay) has had a frustrating day at work at a construction site in a small town, while also avoiding insecure texts from her significant other. She decides to go to a local bar to blow off some steam. What started as a fun and flirty meeting with a seemingly nice stranger (Arieh Worthalter), turns into a life-or-death struggle as Eve becomes the unknowing target of a misogynistic plot against her. Forced to flee as the unnamed man and his accomplice (Ciaran O’Brien) pursue her through the forest, Eve is pushed to her limits while fighting to survive in the wilderness.

The festival line up featured filmmaker panels, creative conversations and workshops, digital networking, and a selection of short films showcasing womxn voices from across the globe.
I had the privilege of attending several of these panels, conversations and workshops. This is a short recap of my first experience attending this very important and well planned film festival.
I first met Carolyn Mauricette at the Blood In The Snow Film Festival (BITS) a few years back. I have also been following her write on View From The Dark, where she examines and writes about genre film from a Woman of Colour’s perspective.
Aside from her writing, Carolyn is also a programmer at BITS. I am happy to have had a chance to speak with her about her writing, and about her role as programmer at BITS and some of her picks at this year’s festival.
Hot Docs has added the new monthly film series For Viola to its VOD platform Hot Docs at Home. Named in honour of Canadian civil rights icon Viola Desmond, the important documentary series will centre around Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC)-led stories and filmmakers.
This fall, the series will feature of favourite documentaries of mine including, Charles Officer’s 2017 Festival doc Unarmed Verses and the 2019 Festival film In My Blood It Runs, directed by Maya Newell.
